Anthony Mattacchione led Jesuit Rugby to victory for the 200
th time this weekend, as the Rangers defeated Strake Jesuit on Friday night and Houston Memorial on Saturday afternoon. The Rangers beat Strake Jesuit 22-7 Friday night, then the varsity squad demolished Houston Memorial, 52-0, less than 24 hours later.
In the Strake Jesuit game, senior
Cole Wilson got the Rangers on the board with an early try, while classmates
Edward Talatala and
Joey Nuchereno followed suit with tries of their own. Junior
Dane Bender was 2-for-3 on conversions and also knocked in a penalty kick to bring Jesuit to the 22-7 victory. Saturday afternoon against Memorial, Jesuit notched four tries in the first half. Nuchereno scored twice, while Wilson and junior
Emmet Flood added to the barrage and Bender went 4-for-4 on conversions. In the second half, seniors
Andrew Murphy,
Billy Newman, and
Nick Pace each had tries to round out the score sheet. Jesuit opens the season 2-0 before returning to Dallas to face Plano Thursday, February 5, at Postell Stadium.
Coach Mattacchione launched the Jesuit Rugby program, and has served as head coach since rugby became a varsity sport during the 1999-2000 school year. Jesuit's first varsity team (pictured above) went 13-4-1, and began a tradition of excellence. In the 16 years since, Jesuit Rugby has reached the Texas High School Rugby Final Four 12 times, and has won two Texas State Championships (2001 and 2010).
Under Mattacchione, Jesuit boasts a 200-54-3 record, and has 10 West Regional Championship Appearances. Coach Matta has also brought national recognition to the program, bringing the Rangers on seven national and international tours, and hosting the annual Jesuit Dallas Rugby Showdown. Under his tutelage, Jesuit has established itself as one of the most admired high school rugby programs in the state of Texas.
